The sun-drenched spring air permeates the tangle of branches the beavers call home, beckoning the family out of their cozy burrows. Their winter diet of dry buds and twigs gives way to a juicy salad of fresh water lilies and tender leaves. The building instincts awaken, and soon these hard workers are back to work. But beyond the rustle of branches and the smack of tails on wet mud, another sound can be heard: hammering. In a nearby maple grove, farmers are drilling into the thick trunks, creating channels for the sweet sap to flow. Unmoved, the beavers continue their labor. Together they work: the beavers build their lodges while the farmers harvest the sweet sap, guiding it to the sugar shack where alchemy will transform it into a rich, golden syrup.
